Local Company Trains First
Responders
Nielson Construction of Huntington, Utah sees the value of trained first responders
in the community, and provides training for their employees.
Wayne Nielson has always been a forward thinker and a leader in his community. When accidents
happen in Eastern Utah they often affect his employees and ultimately himself. In June of 2009, a fatal car crash
took the life of a local young woman. Several Nielson Construction employees were the first people on scene, and
Wayne realized his company of several hundred people canvassed eastern Utah in the course of their daily
responsibilities. More often than not, his employees are the first to find vehicle crashes, and industrial
accidents in the area. He quickly approached his safety department manager, and another of his employees who also
serves as a local EMT-I for the Emery County Ambulance Service. After thorough planning Wayne committed to training
First Responders within the ranks of Nielson Construction.
Castle Valley Resources has teamed up with Nielson Construction and has provided discounted
training for Nielson Construction First Responders. Currently, Castle Valley Resources and Nielson Construction
have trained 16 First Responders who have already responded to several emergencies within just a few weeks of
completing their training. The two partnered companies have already planned for more first responder courses to be
held in the fall when the busy summer construction season slows down.
Castle Valley Resources and Nielson Construction are currently working with local CERT
officials, to more effectively interface the new First Responders with the local emergency management teams.
Castle Valley Resources would like to recognize all of the individuals who have volunteered
to be trained as First Responders. There were literally dozens of individuals who stepped forward, wanting to
make a difference in their communities. Because of this volunteer spirit, these folks completed their spring
courses with 14 of the 16 passing their course work with most of these in the 90-99% on their written exams, and
all were testing in the 95-100% on their practical exams. These test results are outstanding!
Our hats are off to Nielson Construction for leading the construction industry by training
First Responders, and to each of these quiet hero's, who stand ready to help in times of emergency medical
crisis!
